Knotting a tie is one task that every average guy out there should have a grasp of but surprisingly this isn’t the case. There are different ways to knot a tie depending on the type of style you want. These styles range from the simple knot, four in hand knot, Windsor knot, half- Windsor knot and an array of other styles.
There is however no need to know how to knot a tie in all the styles available and as such, we will be giving you a guide that follows the styles that are suitable for corporate settings, dinners and casual events.
Simple Knot
The simple knot is also known as the Kent knot, Petit Noeud or Oriental Knot. This style of knotting ties contain the fewest possible steps in comparison to other styles and it’s one style that should be very easy for you to grasp. This style is widely popular in the middle east and Asia but rarely worn in much of Europe and America. The reason for this may be attributed to the fact that it is difficult to untie.
The Simple knot style is one that is very compact and has an asymmetry design that makes it lean towards the active end. If you’re keen on adopting this style, it’s best you have a height that is above 6 feet and you employ it for ties with thick materials for it to provide a little extra length.
Simple Knot Tying Instructions
Step 1: Commence with the backside of the tie facing away from you. Put the wide end on the right and the small end on the left. Allow the tip of the small end to rest slightly above your belly-button. This usually depends on the length and thickness of the tie and how tall you are. Ensure you move only the wide end.
Step 2: proceed to put the wide end of the tie under the small end towards your left side.
Step 3: move the wide end across the small end towards your right side.
Step 4: move the wide end into the neck loop from underneath.
Step 5: move it down through the loop you’ve just made in the front.
Step 6: pull down the wide end to tighten the loop. Move the knot you made up to adjust the tie appropriately.
The Four in hand Knot
This knot is named after a 19th Century Gentleman’s Club. It is a simple and very versatile knot which is widely popular all around the world. It is also simple to knot and has a slender and tapered end. It is self-releasing, asymmetrical and easy to tie. And if you are to choose only one style of the that you want to learn to knot, it should be the Four-in-Hand.
Four-in-Hand Knot Tying Instructions
Step 1: Commence the Four-in-Hand process by placing the wide end of the tie on the right and the small end on the left. Start with the small end which should be slightly above your belly-button button. Ensure you move only the wide end.
Step 2: move the wide end over the small end to the left.
Step 3: move the wide end under the small end and towards your right side.
Step 4: move the wide end across the front towards your left side.
Step 5: move the wide end upwards into the neck loop from underneath the loop.
Step 6: move the wide end down through the loop you made in the front.
Step 7: make the loop tight by pulling down on the wide end and moving the knot forward to adjust.
Windsor Knot
The Windsor knot is known for its wide triangular knot style. The Windsor knot style also has a lot of derivatives including the half Windsor but one thing all Windsor styles maintain the symmetry and solid triangular knots. It is most appropriate for collars that are spread out.
Windsor Knot Tying Instructions
Step 1: Commence with the wide end of the Tie on your right and the small end on your left. Allow the tip of the small end to rest slightly above your belly-button. Start with the wide end of the tie on the right and the small end on the left.
Step 2: move the wide end over the small end towards your left side.
Step 3: move the wide end into the neck loop from underneath.
Step 4: move the wide end down the left.
Step 5: Move the wide end around the back of the small end towards your right side.
Step 6 : move the wide end upwards to the centre and towards the neck loop.
Step 7: move the wide end through the neck loop and down to the right.
Step 8: move the wide end across the front towards your left side.
Step 9: move it up into the neck loop from underneath.
Step 10: move the wide end down through the loop that you just made in the front.
Step 11: make the knot tight by pulling down on the wide end. Pull the knot up and adjust appropriately.
These three knot styles should provide you with enough variations to rock your ties.
